Final Project

The final project required me to use at least three different media forms to tell a story. I wanted to create something that young children would enjoy listening to, watching and something creative for them to do. My project consist of a 7-8 min radio show that includes  a story, 2 poems and some riddles. Also there is a “how to video” of a fun little craft. The last media form I used was a mini movie of pictures set to music. I picked a winter holiday theme because I love the magic of Christmas.

The radio show. I created 8 individual tracks over several days and then combined them using audacity. It took me several tries to edit out the silent spots. It was a challenge to make this radio show go smoothly and I am pleased with the results. I read the story “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore, one of my favorite Christmas stories. There are two poems, “Christmas Long Ago” by Jo Geis and “When Santa Claus Comes” author unknown. The last section is riddles for children because this was made for children to enjoy. Audacity was a challenge to learn but I am getting better at using it and  I will use it to be creative after this class ends.

The second part of this project is a ‘how to” video. I decided to make a count down to Christmas calendar. Kids like to cut, paint, draw, glue and use glitter.  After listening to the radio show, they will have something to create that will help them count down the days until Santa Clause comes to town. I used my cell phone to make the video and it took several tries to get a video that I liked. I love to be creative and make things, so this was really fun for me.

The last part of this is a visual that include several images of Santa Clause. These images are of Santa Clauses from around the world. This give the kids a chance to see what Santa looks like in other parts of the world. I did some research and found images online. When I had my images, I imported them into iMove and edited them to show the best parts of the images. The images wee all times for the same amount of screen time. music was needed to ties all the images together so I found a instrumental Christmas song and added it to the iMove.

Looking back on this semester in Digital Storytelling. This was a course that was full of new information and learning experiences for me. I took this class because I wanted to be able to tell stories in the digital world. This class will help my when I become a teacher, I will be able to use my new knowledge to create interesting things for my students to have in class.  At the end of the school year I will be able to make a video using pictures of my students, our special occasions and fun activities that we have done during our year together. It will be a digital documentation of our year together.

Here is my final project, in 3 parts. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Week 12 Remix

For both of these remixes I used Canva to edit the photos I found online. I use photos online because I do not want to put pictures of my family on my school website. This was a fun assignment once I figured out what I was doing.

First remix, add a character to your favorite photo.

My remix, the pet rabbit is sitting in the cozy chair by the fire. I don’t like the family pet in my beautiful Christmas tree photo.

Second remix:Your Parents Don’t Want You Seeing This.

My remix photo. Parents don’t want you to know what they wore or what they did at the beach. This is a group of picture of parents at the beach as teenagers. These parents don’t want their kids to see them during their younger years.

Week 12 Daily Creates

First Daily Create of week 12. For this assignment, I was suppose to caption this New Yorker cartoon. The person dressed up as a bunny reminded me of the movie A Christmas Story where Ralphie is dressed in a Halloween costume as a pink bunny.

Celebrating 25 with ds106 create. The first thing I thought of was a game I played with some young students. We skip counted using nickels and placed small foam circles on the correct answer on the game board. I had a lot of fun playing this game with the students. Yes, I found the spelling mistake the day after I posted this tweet.

Mashups Assignments for week 12

Mashups assignments    12 Stars

Logo Switch Up     2 Stars

For this Mashup, I combined two of my kids favorite places to eat. We now have McDonald’s selling pizza. I used Canva to combine the McDonald logo with a pizza from Pizza hut. I tried to put the pizza behind the golden arches but I ended up making a mess. So we have a floating McDonald’s logo with a floating pizza.

Holiday Mashup     4 1/2 Stars

Holiday Mashup required me to combine 3 holidays into one picture. I used Firey Dragon that I created for this class. She is wearing a Santa hat for Christmas, holding an Easter basket with Easter eggs and she is holding the American flag that represents the 4th of July. I used Canva for this project and searched for pictures that had no background or where considered transparent. It did take time to resize all the elements in order to fit Fireys size. It was  trial and error until I got the look I wanted.

Mashing Friends And Emojis     4 Stars

This is my favorite Emoji, I have a pair of sun glass almost like the Emoji. I couldn’t find anyone to pose wearing my glasses or any other pair of dark sun glasses. So, I searched on the internet for photos of people wearing sunglasses, I was determined to do this assignment. I used Canva to put the two pictures side by side for this assignment.

The @IamTalkyTina Headswap   21/2 Stars

For this assignment I used a phone app to put the head of Talky Tina on Albert Einsteins body. I used Faceover Lite  phone app, its free through the App store. I was really surprised how well the hair of both characters blended together in this photo.  It did take a little trial and error to get the Talky Tina face cropped and blended into the Einstein photo. I am happy with the results.

Daily Creates week 10

This week I was only required to d 2 Daily Creates. The first one is about Ratty Old T-Shirts. I have several but do not believe they should be posted online. My t-shirts are over-sized and comfortable. The are so comfortable that  I really enjoy having a day at home so I can wear them.

The second Daily Create for the week is The Area Man News. What is our famous friend Area Man thinking about today? Area Man is thinking about English classes, today I had a paper due in Games and Culture class and I struggled with this essay on criticism. I did get my paper done and submitted on time. Writing essays is not my favorite thing to do, I seem to struggle with  essays.

Storytelling Within the Web Week 9

 Storytelling Within the Web assignment

This assignment introduced a new web tool, Mozzilla X-Ray Googles Tool. This allowed me to change a current website without having to learn coding. I was able to see how the website was constructed and make changes. Starting out with this tool was somewhat difficult for me but after playing with it a few times, I finally figured it out. I tried amazon sale items, craigslist items and then I finally found a book review that turned out the way I visioned it.

Small steps, I took my time and made changes one small section at a time. This way I could see the changes without getting overwhelmed if I didn’t like the changes. It was easier to modify small changes than it was to modify large sections. Maybe I have created a fictional best selling cookbook for Dragons.

I tried to tie this into my character that I have been creating all semester. I do believe that Fiery the Dragon would enjoy this Dragon Cookbook. It would help her to create amazing Dragon dinners for her and her relatives.

Here is a screenshot of the original book review page:

Here is the link to my version of this book review.

Daily Creates for Week 9

The real story behind this weeks Daily Creates. This is my favorite dog, his name is Taco. After I went to school, he decided to get on my laptop and explore the web. He is very creative and likes to create things online.

While Taco was searching the web for Halloween crafts, he came across this web page where he could make monsters. It sounded like a fun thing to do but, Taco learned to use the printer and printed out every monster he created. Instead of putting the pictures in a notebook, he glued them to the wall!! I was not very happy when I came home form school and my walls were plastered in creepy monsters.

After Taco plastered my walls with monsters, he went looking for pumpkin patterns. This year Taco decided he was going to help carve pumpkins. He wanted to get a head start and began looking for patterns for his pumpkins. He probably spent way to many hours looking at carved pumpkins. When I came home from class, I found these two pumpkins on my doorstep. Inside, the kitchen was a mess from pumpkin guts all over the place. There was not a clean spot in the kitchen, pumpkin guts were everywhere!!

It had been a long day for Taco and he wanted a hug. He searched online for human hugs and found the picture below!!! Free Hugs, it sounded nice until he noticed the chainsaw. Taco no longer wanted any hugs. Can you blame him? He needed to get this awful picture out of his mind. So he searched the web and found…..

These lovely ladies. He knew they could cast a spell on the red chainsaw guy and make him disappear. 1……2…..3….poof, the red chainsaw guy was gone!! Taco was once again happy and felt safe inside his home. He had a busy day and was tired. Taco got this favorite pillow and blanket, then curled in his favorite corner of the couch and slept.

I hope you have enjoyed the adventure of a very smart and curious dog named Taco. Thanks for reading.

Week 8 Summary

Daily Creates

As the old New Yorker cartoon goes, “On the Internet, nobody knows you are a dog.” For today’s Daily Create, imagine what a tech savvy dog would do with its online access.

If my dog had access to the internet, he would order his favorite dog treats, steak and french fries. It is scary to think of all the food and dog toys my dog would order online. If he is smart enough to search the web and place and order, I hope he is smart enough to have a job to pay for all his new toys and food.

Future. Make an image that represents the potential of things to come.

I have learned that your future is yours to create. Planning and achieving goals now will help to create an incredible future. This is one of the many reasons I have returned to school to get  a masters in elementary education.

Who did it?

This was a big deal in the 1980’s. Who shot JR? I remember when this show was on the air. It was a big mystery that everyone was talking about. There were all sorts of items printed with the slogan “Who Shot JR?”.

This is my groups radio broadcast. The group I was in used a slack channel to communicate with each other. The time was divided up among the group members. We all made bumpers and created a story about our character. We posted all of this in the slack group. When everyone posted all of their recordings, the individual parts were combined into a radio broadcast. Communication was a key factor in making this broadcast come to life.  Everyone in my group worked hard and did a great job making this broadcast. I hope everyone who listens to this radio show enjoys it.

This week I learned more about voice recording  and what all goes into a radio broadcast. I was not looking forward to this group project, but I was pleasantly surprise with how this group project was done. I got to work with a group of talented students who all worked together to get this project completed. I am fortunate to have been in a group of hard working students.

Weekly Summary – Week 4 – Picture the Myth

This week was about the photography, the visual side of digital storytelling. I analyzed my photography skills. My photography skill have plenty of room for improvements. I did have to look online for collage building sites. it was fun looking at all the different types of collages. I enjoyed making the digital collages. The visual assignments did cause me a few problems but my creative side did help.

Daily created where fun and didn’t take a long time to finish. My favorite one was the Doomsday Shelter. There were so many pictures and articles on the internet.

20 minute Photoblitz was a challenge and took some fast creative thinking to produce the pictures. This is an activity I would like to use in my elementary classroom when I become a teacher. There are so many ways this could be used in the classroom.

Another fun week of assignments in Digital Storytelling.

Week Three: Writing the Legends

Bring It All Together

I read an English fairy tale called Three Feathers. The main character started off as a normal wife with a husband that she never saw. She was curious about her husband and created a way to see him, then the story takes a turn. Her husband was a human but after she saw him, he turned into a bird. She was then given a task to complete that would turn her husband back into a human. She was given three feathers by her husband and sent to work as a laundry maid for seven year years, The feathers were magical and helped her get out of many different situation. In the end she ended up going to a castle and living happy ever after.

This story has the characteristics that were described in the video. It starts with and average situation then something happens to change the average into below average. The character soon lives below the standards she was used to living. As most fairytales, she lives happy ever after in the castle.

This story kept my attention because I was curious how she was going to use the feathers. In the story, she gets herself into several situations that require her to use her feathers. There was a sense of mystery in this story that kept me wanting more details about the main character. I knew she would live happy ever after but I was curious about how she go to her happy ever after.

Create a Character

My character’s name is Fiery Dragon. She is a storyteller, her stories my not always be true. The stories she shares are about myths and legends that have been passed down from generations. As far has she is concerned, there is always time for a story and she has a story to tell about every situation. Some of her stories have a moral to them and some of them are just plain garbage that she has made up to fit the current situation. What makes her an interesting, is her passion and spirit that she uses to tell her stories. Be aware that you do not want to get on her bad side, she is quick tempered and can be very aggressive. For the most part she is determined to spread joy and happiness to all that she meets.

Writing Assignments = 10 Stars Required

Sharing Credit 4 Stars

Instructions: This is an assignment for two or more people.   It’s very simple: Take turns writing a collaborative story via email, each writing a minimum of 4 times.  Have fun with it!

Mom: One day, there was a very strange weather report that said…..

Daughter: “Everyone stay inside! There is a volcano warning for this afternoon.”

Mom: It was a very strange weather report because we don’t live near any volcanos!! The radio station must be from another country.

Daughter: That is when they realized, they had taken the wrong radio by accident.

Mom: how could I have been so careless and taken the wrong radio? Who has my radio?

Daughter: So the mom of the group decided to go on a little adventure to find her radio and switch for the one she had.

Mom: The mom loaded up the kids in the van and packed plenty of snacks for their adventure.

Daughter: She decided to drive to France, because that’s when she last listened to her real radio.

Mom: Then she woke up and realized it was only a dream. The end.

10 Seconds of Thanks 2 ½ Stars

Using a timer, write what you’re thankful for in just 10 seconds! Anything and everything that you can think of being thankful for is fair game, but stop at 10 seconds. 2. Share what you’ve written on a blog, wiki, or some other digital space that others can comment on. 3. Bonus! Complete a 10 second drawing of yourself to accompany your writing, inspired by the November 19th, 2012 Daily Create!

  1. My family and friends.
  2. Thankful I get to go to college at UMW.
  3. My fur babies.

What’s in a name? 2 Stars

Write a blog in which you tell us something, anything, about either your given names or your blog name(s).

I decided to use my name for this writing assignment. My first name is Julie.  My mother named me after a character on her favorite daytime TV show called Days of Our Lives. I looked up may name in the Urban dictionary and I am not sure this really describes who I am but I found it to be very interesting. I have posted the Urban Dictionary definition below:

A beautiful, bold girl who is so unbelievably loyal and talented that she outshines anyone in the vicinity. A girl who’s unique tastes and forms of expression are so remarkable and extraordinary that you hardly even know what to do with yourself and have no doubt that she more than likely invented the word ‘flabbergasted’. A girl who is always overlooked but never ignored once found. She blends in so well with everything around her that she doesn’t disturb anyone or anything. Akin to mother nature, she’s the one who brings life and wonder to all without them even realizing it. She’s so carefree and happy that anyone’s laughter, compared to hers, isn’t as sincere.

For the special few that dare go outside of the box, that dare not walk the line, that dare to even try to think unique… You’ll finally see her and she’ll never leave your side. Every moment is bliss and even though you long to introduce her to every single other person on the face of the planet… She’s so shy that she’ll hide in your shadow and rather not be seen. She doesn’t know how honestly beautiful and intelligent she is. She doesn’t dare call attention to herself and is simply happy having a few very close friends.

Julie is simply too amazing and her love is endless. And the love shown back for her is tenfold.

Holifaves 2 ½ Stars

While we’re in a long string of Holiday seasons, lets keep things a little festive. For this assignment you are to write about your favorite holiday. Be as descriptive as possible. What makes it your favorite? Is there a special memory attached to it? What smells or sounds remind you of it?

If I had to pick one holiday, it would have to be Christmas. There is just something about Christmas that is magical for me. The Christmas tree in the family room all decorated with ornaments my kids and I have made, and a few of our favorite store bought ornaments. The tree lights are white and reflect off all the ornaments and the window that the tree sits beside. I can’t forget the fireplace that is in the middle of the room beside the tree. Christmas has a new meaning now that I have children, there is nothing like experiencing Christmas through the eyes of a child.

Christmas Day my house is filled with the smell of the fireplace and the ham in the oven. The smells fill the house with holiday cheer. Christmas Dinner is always a big production at my house and I love that about Christmas. It is something that my family looks forward to after all the gifts are opened from Santa. Christmas is magical if you believe in magic.

Every year I wish for a very snowy Christmas, but my wish doesn’t always come true. Christmas is still magical because of the people who share the holiday with me.

Daily Creates

12 September Award Somebody a Badge Today

13 September Gremlins

14 September Lunch Art

This weeks assignments were fun. I did struggled a little with the writing part of this assignment. I do not consider myself a good writing. I enjoyed reading the fairy tales this week, it was hard to pick one to write about. The daily creates were a fun challenge. My daughter liked the “Lunch Art”, when I was finished it became her lunch. I do know I still need to work on  commenting on my classmates work. Looking forward to week 4.
