Think about the Visuals of Storytelling – Week 4

My current experience with photography. I do take a lot of photos and I generally take more photos during the holidays and at special events. I have four kids and two of them are active in music so there is always opportunity for photos. I do try to capture the moment for my kids to look back upon later in life. Special moments with their friends, special events and concerts. I am aware of the background when I take photos and of the surroundings. It is hard for me to really capture the true feeling of my subjects in a photo. The meaning of the photo is usually the special event/concert, or something just out of the ordinary day. I need to capture the moments without it looking like it was staged, looking for a more relaxed photo. I know I need to work on the lighting and the backgrounds in my photos. Not everything needs to be photographed, sometimes you just need to live in the moment and create the memories.

Picture in Myth Visual Assignment

You in Collage Form. Make it about the character that was created last week.

This is a preview of my character that I created in last weeks assignments.

Week 4 Visual Assignment

2 Stars Places of Piece

Create a collage of photos with all of your favorite spots where you feel relaxed or at peace. This should include at least four photos and can be places on-campus, at home, or maybe a spot you found while traveling. Then post the college to twitter.

The beach and the mountains are my favorite places to go and unwind and recharge. Unfortunately I did not make it to the beach this summer. The mountains are peaceful and relaxing. It is usually cooler in the mountains than it is at my home.

2 Stars Your Favorite Photo

It’s simple. Choose your favorite photo you’ve taken and tell everyone why you love it so much.

This is my cat, Smokey. I got him when he was about 3 days old. He had to be bottle fed every 2-3 hours, just like a newborn baby. In this picture he is a couple of month old. Every time I would get out of this chair, he would jump in the chair and go to sleep.

4 Stars   Create a silly Movie Poster

Take an existing movie poster and make it look silly.

I used the Grinch Movie poster and added a hanging bat, hanging spider, an oragne balloon and soem silly squggles.

2 Stars   You in Collage Form

This comes with simple instructions. Make a collage with images and words that describe you or mean something to you. This can either be done with actual materials like paper and magazine clips or by taking images, memes, and fonts from the Internet. Be careful to focus on the design of the collage, not just putting things together in a big glob. Have fun and be creative!

I love my family! They are my biggest supporters and they give my strength when I need it and encourage me to be the best that I can be. Snowman in the Christmas scene describes me very well. I can watch Christmas movies year around and I love snowmen. Christmas is my favorite season, its magical. Snowflakes, I am like a child when the first snowflakes fall every year. I love snow!! Can Am Motorcycle- this is a hobby that my husband and I share. I have been all over the state of Virginia and West Virginia. Quilt picture- I love to quilt, unfortunately I do not have the time to quilt with my college schedule. I do quilt and sew during holiday breaks and between semesters. This is me.

Daily Creates Week 4

The first daily create for this week. You as a plant. I love roses, so I found this rose bush to be perfect for me.

Second daily create of the week. Fine Art Pop Culture Mashup. Pokemon Go seems to be a popular game in today’s culture. My favorite character is Pekachu and I think he fits in this picture perfectly.

Third daily create is Doomsday Shelter. My Doomsday shelter looks almost like an average house.

A 20 Minute Photoblitz

This challenge was exciting and fast paced. Here are the rules for this assignment. In the next 20 minutes, try to capture as many of the photo ideas listed as you can. Take a photo of a timepiece that shows the time you started and the time you stopped. It should be twenty minutes since step 1, right? I have added the photos under each photo challenge.

  • Photo of start time.

I used the times on my cell phone.

  • Out and about walking?

This is a flower bush I saw while I was walking in my neighborhood.

  • The theme is red. Red hot? Red paint? Or something else? You decide.

I went into my sewing room and found red items.

  • Illustrate attraction in a photograph today.

Kings Dominion is a entertainment attraction. I used a season pass for this picture.

  • Make an image that represents hope.

I took this photo of the sky and used the Phonto app on my cell phone to add the words.

  • Make a photo of an outdoor scene free of any human artifacts.

This photo was taken in my backyard. This was one of the reasons why we love this house, all the trees in the backyard. They divide our subdivision from the new subdivision being built.

  • Squeaks, honks, laughter, etc. Make a photo of a noise maker you hear.

This is a melodica, my daughter loves musical instruments. Yes, it squeaks, honks and makes the family laugh when she play it.

  • “Music is what feelings sound like.” Make a photo of something musical.

A sheet of music. I have two daughter that play in their school orchestras. My house is filled with a lot of musical entertainment. I love listening to them play their instruments.

  • Photo of ending time.

Time is up.

Week Three: Writing the Legends

Bring It All Together

I read an English fairy tale called Three Feathers. The main character started off as a normal wife with a husband that she never saw. She was curious about her husband and created a way to see him, then the story takes a turn. Her husband was a human but after she saw him, he turned into a bird. She was then given a task to complete that would turn her husband back into a human. She was given three feathers by her husband and sent to work as a laundry maid for seven year years, The feathers were magical and helped her get out of many different situation. In the end she ended up going to a castle and living happy ever after.

This story has the characteristics that were described in the video. It starts with and average situation then something happens to change the average into below average. The character soon lives below the standards she was used to living. As most fairytales, she lives happy ever after in the castle.

This story kept my attention because I was curious how she was going to use the feathers. In the story, she gets herself into several situations that require her to use her feathers. There was a sense of mystery in this story that kept me wanting more details about the main character. I knew she would live happy ever after but I was curious about how she go to her happy ever after.

Create a Character

My character’s name is Fiery Dragon. She is a storyteller, her stories my not always be true. The stories she shares are about myths and legends that have been passed down from generations. As far has she is concerned, there is always time for a story and she has a story to tell about every situation. Some of her stories have a moral to them and some of them are just plain garbage that she has made up to fit the current situation. What makes her an interesting, is her passion and spirit that she uses to tell her stories. Be aware that you do not want to get on her bad side, she is quick tempered and can be very aggressive. For the most part she is determined to spread joy and happiness to all that she meets.

Writing Assignments = 10 Stars Required

Sharing Credit 4 Stars

Instructions: This is an assignment for two or more people.   It’s very simple: Take turns writing a collaborative story via email, each writing a minimum of 4 times.  Have fun with it!

Mom: One day, there was a very strange weather report that said…..

Daughter: “Everyone stay inside! There is a volcano warning for this afternoon.”

Mom: It was a very strange weather report because we don’t live near any volcanos!! The radio station must be from another country.

Daughter: That is when they realized, they had taken the wrong radio by accident.

Mom: how could I have been so careless and taken the wrong radio? Who has my radio?

Daughter: So the mom of the group decided to go on a little adventure to find her radio and switch for the one she had.

Mom: The mom loaded up the kids in the van and packed plenty of snacks for their adventure.

Daughter: She decided to drive to France, because that’s when she last listened to her real radio.

Mom: Then she woke up and realized it was only a dream. The end.

10 Seconds of Thanks 2 ½ Stars

Using a timer, write what you’re thankful for in just 10 seconds! Anything and everything that you can think of being thankful for is fair game, but stop at 10 seconds. 2. Share what you’ve written on a blog, wiki, or some other digital space that others can comment on. 3. Bonus! Complete a 10 second drawing of yourself to accompany your writing, inspired by the November 19th, 2012 Daily Create!

  1. My family and friends.
  2. Thankful I get to go to college at UMW.
  3. My fur babies.

What’s in a name? 2 Stars

Write a blog in which you tell us something, anything, about either your given names or your blog name(s).

I decided to use my name for this writing assignment. My first name is Julie.  My mother named me after a character on her favorite daytime TV show called Days of Our Lives. I looked up may name in the Urban dictionary and I am not sure this really describes who I am but I found it to be very interesting. I have posted the Urban Dictionary definition below:

A beautiful, bold girl who is so unbelievably loyal and talented that she outshines anyone in the vicinity. A girl who’s unique tastes and forms of expression are so remarkable and extraordinary that you hardly even know what to do with yourself and have no doubt that she more than likely invented the word ‘flabbergasted’. A girl who is always overlooked but never ignored once found. She blends in so well with everything around her that she doesn’t disturb anyone or anything. Akin to mother nature, she’s the one who brings life and wonder to all without them even realizing it. She’s so carefree and happy that anyone’s laughter, compared to hers, isn’t as sincere.

For the special few that dare go outside of the box, that dare not walk the line, that dare to even try to think unique… You’ll finally see her and she’ll never leave your side. Every moment is bliss and even though you long to introduce her to every single other person on the face of the planet… She’s so shy that she’ll hide in your shadow and rather not be seen. She doesn’t know how honestly beautiful and intelligent she is. She doesn’t dare call attention to herself and is simply happy having a few very close friends.

Julie is simply too amazing and her love is endless. And the love shown back for her is tenfold.

Holifaves 2 ½ Stars

While we’re in a long string of Holiday seasons, lets keep things a little festive. For this assignment you are to write about your favorite holiday. Be as descriptive as possible. What makes it your favorite? Is there a special memory attached to it? What smells or sounds remind you of it?

If I had to pick one holiday, it would have to be Christmas. There is just something about Christmas that is magical for me. The Christmas tree in the family room all decorated with ornaments my kids and I have made, and a few of our favorite store bought ornaments. The tree lights are white and reflect off all the ornaments and the window that the tree sits beside. I can’t forget the fireplace that is in the middle of the room beside the tree. Christmas has a new meaning now that I have children, there is nothing like experiencing Christmas through the eyes of a child.

Christmas Day my house is filled with the smell of the fireplace and the ham in the oven. The smells fill the house with holiday cheer. Christmas Dinner is always a big production at my house and I love that about Christmas. It is something that my family looks forward to after all the gifts are opened from Santa. Christmas is magical if you believe in magic.

Every year I wish for a very snowy Christmas, but my wish doesn’t always come true. Christmas is still magical because of the people who share the holiday with me.

Daily Creates

12 September Award Somebody a Badge Today

13 September Gremlins

14 September Lunch Art

This weeks assignments were fun. I did struggled a little with the writing part of this assignment. I do not consider myself a good writing. I enjoyed reading the fairy tales this week, it was hard to pick one to write about. The daily creates were a fun challenge. My daughter liked the “Lunch Art”, when I was finished it became her lunch. I do know I still need to work on  commenting on my classmates work. Looking forward to week 4.

Week 2 – Daily Creates, Assignment Bank and Customizing my Blog

The Daily Creates

This was fun and interesting to see what the “create of the day” challenge on Twitter was going to be. I was impatient waiting for the next days create, I am not a very patient person. The three “create of the day” that I chose were, Can you hear me knocking strangely, Doubles and How small can I draw. All of the creates were fun and made me think creatively.

The first create of the day was, can you hear me knocking strangely. This took  some time to figure out how and where is was going to record the knocking sound.

The second create of the day was, Doubles. I decided to use my favorite candies as doubles. After-all, two sets of candy is always better than one.

The third daily create was, How small can I draw. For this create challenge, I borrowed my daughters very fine tip pen to draw the flower. My children are always willing to make suggestions and/or letting me borrow their supplies for my homework assignments.

Assignment Bank

It was fun looking at all the assignments that I had to choose from. I spent way to much time looking at all my option. From the Visual section, I did the Camp Poster. Google Draw Something came form the Web Assignment section. Can’t forget the Design Assignment category, that is where I found Generate Cool Letter. I spent a lot of time playing/learning about these assignments.

The first assignment was the Camp poster. I never went to camp as a kid, I never wanted to go to camp. I changed the assignment just a little. I made a Camp Poster for a Camp for Mom’s. Sometimes a mom needs to have a break away from being a mom, just to relax and recharge.

The next assignment was, Google Draw Something. I spent way to much time playing with Google Draw. The program said my paintbrush looked like a carrot, I thought that was funny.

The last assignment was Generate Cool Letters. I played with several words and phrases, checked out the different colors and backgrounds. You can do so much with this website.

Customizing the Blog

This is still a work in progress because I am still learning to use the tools for my domain and blogs. I hope to keep making improvements to my site. I knew this would be a challenge for me but I know I can do it.

This week I have learned that digital studies is fun. There are so many ways to be creative online with websites, blogs and Twitter. Most of this weeks assignments were not as hard as I thought they would be. Being creative with my domain and blog was/is a challenge for me. The creative aspect of the blog drove me crazy this week. I got frustrated because I was not getting the results I wanted. I really enjoyed the doubles and the google draw something, spent way to much time playing with the two assignments.  I do need to work on commenting on my classmates blogs, this was a small challenge for me. Overall, these assignments were a lot of fun and I enjoyed the creativity.  Looking forward to week three assignments.

Week One Summary

In week one, I had to set up the following digital media sites: a blog, YouTube, twitter , soundcloud, Instagram and slack. It has definitely been a learning experience for me. Facebook was the only social media I have ever used but all that changed this week. The only new account I made this week that was “new to me” was Soundcloud, never heard of it until this week.
This week challenges. I had a domain but did not know how to add the subdomain and got frustrated and needed help. I went to the Digital Knowledge Center on Thursday and the UMW WiFi was down and I was not able to get into my account. Three hours later the wifi/server issues was fixed and my subdomain was up and running, thanks to the help from a DKC student. Needless to say, no WiFi/server on campus was very frustrating. This is what drove me crazy this week, I was in panic mode.
Getting connected to slack was the easiest task for me this week. I have never put any video up on youtube and was concerend I would have trouble, it did take some time but I did get the video loaded to my youtube channel. Soundcloud was a new challenge for me as well. I did figure out how to make a voice file and upload it, thanks to help from a family member. Twitter and Instagram where the easiest for me to set up this week, they were less stressful and less confusing. I will be working on my accounts/sites to add pictures and more detail, this is just the beginning.

Introduction-Week 1

Hello Digital World!!

This is my first  post for Digital Storytelling, ds106.

Here is just a small piece of who I am. Over the semester I hope to improve my digital skills. This is just a start….

I posted this picture of a t-shirt that describes one of my hobbies when I have time. I can sit and watch Hallmark Christmas movies anytime of the year.

A post shared by Julie (@magical_story_teller) on

I have never used twitter, this is my first post ever. Check out my tweet.

I had never heard of soundcloud until this class started. It wasn’t sure if it was going to be hard to use,but I did figure it out. This is a short voice track because I was nervous about creating this and it actually working.

I have watched videos on youtube but never thought about uploading a video myself. So i went outside and stood in front of a tree in my yard.

Thanks for looking,

Julie
